There are a number of benefits from participating in therapy. You are not alone and this is a safe place to process your emotions and feelings. Therapy can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. Is therapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a therapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. Exceptions include:
What can I expect in a therapy session?
During sessions you can anticipate talking and processing concerns and issues that are causing challenges in your life. A session is typically 55 minutes, scheduled weekly for the first several weeks. During the time between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed. You may be encouraged to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or article, keeping a journal, or tracking moods, behaviors, and thoughts. Therapy works best when you are an active participant, both in and outside of the therapy sessions.
